Central Vacuum Systems
Our favorite central vacuum is made by Drainvac. We sell model 2PR0038-C This model provides a whopping 146 CFMs and comes with a 10 year limited warranty. CFMs are important because the more air movement you have, the more dirt movement you have. The "water lift" number is a measure of how hard the suction is pulling when something has stopped the air from moving. (Like a toy.) This number is important because it determines how far away you can get from the main suction canister before you start losing CFMs. The 2PR0038-C allows you to get about 150 feet away from the system before there will be a decrease in the CFMs. 150 feet away is a huge enough distance to be able to be used in most homes even as large as 10,000 square feet. Most manufacturers disguise the CFMs and H2O Lift numbers by publishing only "Airwatts" Airwatts are determined by multiplying the CFMs by the H2O lift and dividing by 9. Make sense? Bob doesn't think so either. See the "Bob's Picks" page for more information on this. One other thing, if you "think about vacuums", some websites will exaggerate or make wild claims about certain DrainVac models Airwatt numbers. These folks are actually modifying the original design to be able to boast the higher numbers. DrainVac says that they will not warranty such an item. Bob suggests sticking to the information contained in the Drainvac website.
We also sell Beam, Honeywell, Electrolux, Optima and Dust Care central vacuums. Whichever suction canister you choose, Bob recommends steering clear of the cyclonic type unless you've got the exhaust plumbed to the outside of your home, preferably to an area that is not used very often. The other thing that Bob always says is to steer clear of any type of suction canister that uses a non self-cleaning motor filter. By this he means the type that uses a pleated paper filter or a sponge or foam type filter. These types fill up quickly with hair and fine dirt allowing your system to lose suction in just 3 Months or so. This loss of suction overheats the motor. A hot motor doesn't last as long as a cool motor.
After years of selling lots of different central vacuum accessory sets, we've come to the conclusion that there is only one that stands out as far as reliability and performance. It is the "Stealth Kit" made by MD Manufacturing. It features what we consider to be the best power head available in the industry. The power head is made by Lindhaus in Italy and is one of the only ones that allows one to change the height of the roller brush with respect to the surface of the carpet. This power head also features a non-slipping, non-stretchy belt that spins the roller over 2X faster than conventional heads. It also leaves your carpet beautifully fluffed and line-free! The kit comes with the state-of-the-art bigger inner-diameter, lightweight, crushproof hose made by Plastiflex and is the longer 35 foot one that allows one to reach that back-of-the-closet corner that's been plaguing you since you moved in. This kit also does not "melt-down" or burn at the electrical connections like many of the other brands on the market today. Back to top.
Air Purifiers
We sell the air purifiers made by IQ Air in Switzerland. We originally found out about them by purchasing their particle-counter. We wanted to buy a particle-counter to be able to have an objective method of determining how much dust was coming back out of a vacuum cleaner. So, by coincidence really, we also found a fantastic truly "does-what-they-say" air purifier. The IQ Air purifiers (all of them) read zero, (0), yes, zero on the particle-counter. You can't argue with that. The HealthPro Plus comes with a chemical layer that removes chemicals and odors from the air in addition to the prefilter and the HEPA filter. They also offer a five year warranty and an automatic hour counter that will let you know when to replace each filter layer. The HEPA layer can last up to four years! Ready to buy? Contact us. Miele Vacuum Cleaners
Confused about which model has which feature and which one would meet your needs the best? Let us break it down for you. We don't offer every single model but we offer the ones we like the best and the ones that have all the stuff one might need to really make your house spotless and virtually dust-free.
First off, let us say that the reason we think that the Miele line of vacuum cleaners are the best on the market today is because they use the best "vortex" motor, made in Germany in every canister that they sell. What this means to you is this: The motor uses less power than other domestic electric motors. A motor that uses less power also runs cooler. A cooler motor lasts longer. Now, you might think that a motor that uses less power would provide less suction, eh? Not true. Not in this case anyway. Miele's vortex motor has a fan that is shaped in such a way as to move more air than traditional fan stages. Bravo Miele! The warranty on the motor is seven years! In addition to a great motor that provides fabulous CFM's or airflow (above 130 on most models), Miele also uses the highest quality plastic in conjunction with such obvious features as 360 degree swivel wheels and a self-untangling hose. They also have designed it so that one can use the canister while it is in the upright or sitting-on-it's-butt position. All of the models that we sell come with the upholstery tool, dust brush and the crevice tool. One might almost be led to believe that a woman designed it!
On to the model breakdown:
Our favorite is the Aquarius: Bob loves this one! It is a beautiful aqua blue color and has every possible feature with the exception of the fingertip controls on the handle. It comes with the full-size power head that has the height adjustment feature. This power head is wonderful for high pile or frise carpet. The Aquarius is the only model that has the automatic suction control setting that allows one to set it there and let the maid use it, knowing that she can't "accidentally" ruin any of your fine rugs, tapestries or curtains. Thanks Miele! The Aquarius also features HEPA filtration and reads zero (0) on our particle counter. What this means to you is that virtually all of the dirt and fine dust that you are picking up is being contained inside the vacuum cleaner. What a concept! So, your house gets cleaner and cleaner as time goes on and you should notice less and less dust. This model is made in Germany and imported to the US. If you can afford it, this is the vacuum to buy.
Next is the Callisto. This model is black. It is identical in every way to the Aquarius with these few exceptions: It comes with the mid-sized power head that works great on low-pile carpet, Berber or tightly woven oriental rugs. It does not have the automatic suction control setting. To adjust the suction, one must lean over to move the dial control knob. Bob says that this is the next best choice after the Aquarius.
Next is the Mango Red. This model is the same as the Callisto except: It is not assembled in Germany. It does not normally come with the HEPA filter and so does not read zero (0) on our particle-counter and it does not come with a hardwood floor tool. If you added the HEPA filter it would read zero on the particle-counter and if you added the hardwood floor tool, you're back up to the price of the Callisto. So Bob says, if you're on a tight budget and may want a Miele that you can upgrade later, as money permits, and you love the color red, buy the Mango Red.
Next is the Antares: This model is slightly smaller than all of the above, but comes with all the important stuff and is a great buy if you've got low pile, Berber or Oriental rugs only. It comes with an air-driven power head and therefore there is no need for an electric hose. It does not come with a HEPA filter although you can always add one. It does come with the wonderful parquet or hardwood floor tool. Bob says this is a great vacuum for the money.
Next is the Naturell. This one is the one to buy if you've got mostly hardwood or non-carpet flooring. It comes with a combination floor tool that allows you to retract the bristles for rug cleaning with suction only. Fantastic vacuum for the money!
And last, but not least is the Universal Upright: This is a fabulous little "stick vacuum" that is one of the last ones to still use bags. If you need suction only, as in, you only have hard floor surfaces or if you already have a vacuum that you use on your carpeted flooring try the S163. If you've already got a Miele canister with a power head, you can click it right on to the S168 and have a very powerful upright vacuum. Back to top.
Dyson Vacuum Cleaners
We know, We know. Every independent vacuum cleaner store in the world cringes when we say we endorse the Dyson. After all, the Dyson is sold EVERYWHERE, has very little profit margin and provides virtually zero after-the-sale revenue. But let us explain. First, the Dyson (every model) is the only bagless vacuum that we endorse. The reason for this is the unique technology behind the design. The Dyson really is the only vacuum cleaner that spins the dirt out of the air stream. What this means is that centrifugal force pushes the dirt out to the edges of the dirt chamber and gravity drops it down below the moving air. I don't know if you've guessed it or not but centrifugal force and gravity are fairly reliable things. So, there is nothing to get in the way of the air movement. What this means to you is this: Really, really good suction, room after room, day after day, year after year. And guess what? The Dyson reads really close to zero on our particle-counter. Amazing. The five year warranty is pretty awesome too!
Now, there are some issues that we have seen in our repair shop. Check out our FAQ's page for more information about fixes for specific models. Back to top.
Sanitaire
This is the red upright vacuum that you see at all of the motels. It is the old design where the dirt actually hits the plastic fan blades on its way to the bag. This is a VERY efficient design. Bob thinks that this type of vacuum picks up more dirt in one swipe than most vacuums pick up no matter how many times you go over the area. This is the vacuum that can be used 8 hours a day everyday for 15 years requiring very little in the way of maintenance. Yippee! Don't ask what it reads on our particle-counter. Back to top.
